“Thank you for believing that we can change the world”. With these words, the President of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria bade farewell to the 200 representatives of Spanish and African universities attending the III International Encounter of Universities with Africa which was held over five days of plenary and working sessions in order to define projects for on-going joint collaboration.

Apart from announcing that the next edition of this Encounter, which Ricardo Martínez, the Director General of Casa África has deemed “a consolidated process”, will be held in Senegal in 2012 in line with the decision taken by the organising committee, the President José Regidor also acknowledged numerous expressions of gratitude conveyed by the spokespeople of each delegation. This gratitude was based on the work well done, which enabled “the creation of an institutional space of trust that has become a forum for the materialization of specific projects on a joint basis”, according to the Vice-President for International Relations of the Complutense University of Madrid, Rafael Hernández Tristán.

Participants have worked in the following fields: Education, Health, Water, Sanitations and Renewable Energies, Sustainable Development, Technology and Innovation, Migration and Human Rights, Maritime and marine affairs, and Society and University. In each of these working sessions agreements have been reached with a view to fostering and enhancing university cooperation between Spanish and African institutions.

For future editions, a Continuity Plan has been agreed to that proposes the creation of a permanent forum in Casa África for the advance preparation of international encounters, to contribute to the training of Presidents and managers for centres in Africa and Europe, to boost the creation of the Tri-continental Campus backed by the two universities of the Canary Islands, and create a more technical working group to meet each quarter to ensure that when each Encounter starts “the discussions have been ironed out and attending participants come armed with more concrete ideas and projects”.

The III Institutional Encounter of Universities with Africa was organised by the department of the Vice-President of International and Institutional Relations of the ULPGC, Rosario Berriel Martínez, supported by the Conference of the Presidents of Spanish Universities (CRUE) and backed by Universia. Funding was donated by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), with the collaboration of Casa África, universidad.es, the Regional Government of the Canary Islands, the Island Council of Gran Canaria, the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University Foundation of Las Palmas.

The III International Encounter has continued in the footsteps of the previous editions held in Madrid (October 2007) and Maputo (Mozambique, October 2008), respectively. The Encounter was inaugurated on October 10th, 2010 and the Spanish Minister of Education, Ángel Gabilondo, gave the opening conference.
