The Regional Government of the Canary Islands has awarded a Gold Medal to the two Universities of the Canary Islands for having achieved the status of European Regional Campus of International Excellence to the joint project called The Tri-continental Atlantic Campus of the Universities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Laguna.

At the end of 2010, the Universities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) and La Laguna (ULL) were conceded the distinction of European Regional Campus of International Excellence  with a joint project called CEI Canarias: Tri-continental Atlantic Campus.  With this recognition, the fruit of dialogue and cooperation, both further education centres the two education centres now share a strategy that aims to make the Canaries the Central Atlantic benchmark in values such as research, innovation, teaching and astrophysics. This approach, in which the two Universities of the Canary Islands have worked together, marks a new landmark in the history of the Autonomous Region, thereby contributing to the cohesion and social articulation of the Canary Islands.

The Gold Medal of the Canary Islands is awarded by the Regional Government in recognition of those people, physical or legal, that carry out their daily tasks or lives, in the Canary Islands or elsewhere, to the benefit of Canary Island society.


The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the University of La Laguna and the Regional Department of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands have signed an agreement to establish the conditions governing a long-term loan of 5.3 million Euros, by the Regional Department of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports to the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to finance the execution of the activities included in the CEI-Canarias: Tri-continental Atlantic Campus project.


The activities to be funded with this loan include the following:


- Activities in Marine and Maritime Science and Technology, coordinated by the International ULL-ULPGC Centre for Inter-university Post-graduate studies:


*Postgraduate Studies in Marine Science

* International Master in Integral management of Water: Permanent International Water Forum

* International Master Programme on Transport, Tourism and Environmental Economics

* International Training Programme in Sustainable Development of Marine Resources and Tourism

- Innovation in Teaching-Learning modalities and associated physical spaces for adaptation to the EHEA

- Tri-continental Open Science Programme

- Marine Scientific-Technological Park

- National Algae Bank

- Atlantic Scientific, Technological and Training Centre in Cetaceans

- Centre for Biodiversity and Environmental Management (BIOGES)

- Atlantic Tourism Development Platform

- Atlantic Observatory of Transport in Oceanography and Global Change

- Connectivity Programme for the Campuses through ICT (ESTIC)

- Tri-continental Talent Programme
